Perform KPMP research biopsies on existing kidney disease cohorts

There is a critical need to obtain high-quality biopsies from diverse individuals with kidney disease linked to extensive biosamples and longitudinal clinical phenotypic data to fully realize the goals of the KPMP. This solicitation aims to form new collaborative partnerships with existing kidney disease cohorts who are currently not performing biopsies by providing KPMP opportunity pool funds to add research biopsies.

Strong applications will propose to ethically and safely obtain, share, and harmonize at least 20 human kidney research biopsies per year with the necessary diversity (sex, age, race, and ethnicity) and metadata (including extensive longitudinal clinical data) to meet the objectives of the KPMP.  Applicants must employ current KPMP participant informed consent process and operational protocols developed for biopsy performance, tissue processing, data and biosample capture, etc. ( Existing kidney disease cohorts that already include a biopsy are not eligible for this funding opportunity, but are encouraged to submit a KPMP glue grant application (full details at

Applicants must utilize the KPMP single IRB, Washington University St. Louis. Applicants are encouraged to provide a written commitment from their local IRB demonstrating willingness to rely on the single IRB, and to obtain consent for people to participate in the KPMP and for the collection, use, and sharing of human samples and appropriate affiliated metadata for research purposes. Award is contingent on single IRB approval.

Five (5) page applications may request up to $300,000 total costs per year for two years .
