KPMP at ASN Kidney Week 2018
We recently had the honor of presenting at a session of ASN Kidney Week 2018 dedicated to the Kidney Precision Medicine Project (KPMP).
The session began with Richard Knight, the current President of the American Association of Kidney Patients (AAKP) and co-chair of our community engagement working group (CEWG), discussing the impact of the CEWG on this project, with an emphasis on the specific influence from our patient representatives.
Next up Dr. Robert Star, Director, Kidney, Urologic, and Hematologic Diseases at the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) spoke about how precision medicine can advance nephrology. This talk emphasized the need for the Kidney Precision Medicine Project.
After Dr. Star’s talk, Dr. Krzysztof Kiryluk took the stage to discuss charting a new course to define chronic and acute kidney diseases. He explained some of the problems with the current approaches to define these diseases, reviewed some of the available alternatives, and showed how these approaches informed the development of the KPMP clinical protocol and study design.
Dr. Ulysses Balis was the next to present. He showed a glimpse of the future, demonstrating how the adoption of digital pathology and the integration of machine learning can influence the development and extend the impact of the KPMP’s kidney tissue atlas.
The session was anchored with a talk by Dr. Laura Mariani. She walked the session attendees through several potential uses that are envisioned for the atlas, emphasizing the various functionality needed to support our different user communities – including patients, providers, and researcher scientists.
The session ended with an exciting Q&A period for the entire speaker panel, led by moderators Dr. Paul Kimmel and Mr. Paul Conway.
