KPMP Participant Letter:
January 2025
Dear KPMP Participant,
We have an exciting new opportunity for you!
Starting in January 2025, you can learn about your personal health, at no cost to you. The Kidney Precision Medicine Project (KPMP) will now be offering genetic results. As a valued KPMP participant, you will be offered personalized genetic information, which could give you useful insights into your health, genetic risks, and kidney disease risks.
This initiative includes the interpretation of your results and follow-up with a genetic counselor if any important findings are identified. We anticipate that about 1/3 of all KPMP participants will be impacted. Except for the APOL1 results*, your test results will be added to your electronic health records. However, if you prefer not to receive your results (opt-out), they will still contribute to KPMP research without addition to your electronic health records. This approach shows KPMP’s strong commitment to patient-centered care and advancing our understanding and treatment of kidney disease.
Your research coordinator will tell you more about this opportunity when it applies to you. We believe this information will help you take proactive steps in managing your health.
* Everyone has the APOL1 gene, which evolved in Western and Central Africa to protect against human African trypanosomiasis (HAT), more commonly known as “African sleeping sickness.” Some versions of this gene can increase the risk of kidney disease, and there are no treatments. Because of privacy and discrimination concerns, APOL1 gene results are only used for research and are not included in your medical records.
